AARP Grant Supports Main Street Mile Improvements in Beattyville

New signs, a walking route map, and downtown benches are coming to Beattyville’s Main Street Mile thanks to a 2026 AARP Community Challenge Grant awarded to Beattyville Main Street.

The national program funds quick-action projects that help create more livable communities for people of all ages. Beattyville was selected from more than 5,100 applications submitted nationwide.

The grant supports a clearly marked one-mile walking route through downtown, with wayfinding signs, a new route map, ADA-accessible benches, and safer pedestrian crossings. These improvements will make the Main Street Mile more accessible and inviting while encouraging residents and visitors to explore local shops, restaurants, and community spaces on foot.

On September 16, the Beattyville Main Street Board put on its walking shoes and held its monthly meeting along the Main Street Mile. Members discussed upcoming improvements and plans for the Beattyville Heritage Walk, exploring opportunities to connect walking, local history, downtown businesses, and community pride.

Along the route, the group met a sweet puppy, chatted with members of the Presbyterian Church leaving their evening service, and found a little kindness rock —small moments that highlighted the welcoming character of downtown.

During another recent walk, the route measured 1.02 miles using the Strava app and took just over 21 minutes to complete. Walkers can choose their own pace and leave extra time to browse a store, enjoy a meal, or visit with a neighbor.

Beattyville Main Street thanks AARP for investing in our rural community and recognizes the partners helping make this project possible: the City of Beattyville, Beattyville Main Street board members, the Beattyville/Lee County Tourism Commission, and the Kentucky Main Street Program.

New paper maps are coming soon to help walkers follow the route. Whether you live nearby or are visiting for the day, grab a friend and discover downtown Beattyville one step at a time.

Walk the Main Street Mile at your own risk. Organizers and partners involved in this promotion are not responsible for accidents or injuries. Please follow all pedestrian and traffic laws and use caution along the route.
