Description

Young people in Lee County have a new opportunity to get active, learn new skills, and connect with one of the outdoor activities that has helped put our region on the map.

The Lee County Rec Center is hosting an After-School Climbing Club every Tuesday from 4:00–6:00 PM. For just $7 per participant, youth receive a climbing lesson along with pizza and a pop.

This is more than just an after-school activity. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from experienced rock climbers who can introduce them to climbing techniques, safety, and the skills needed to become more confident on the wall.

Lee County is fortunate to be part of one of the premier rock-climbing destinations in the country. The Red River Gorge Climbers' Coalition owns and manages more than 1,500 acres of recreational land, much of it in Lee County, providing public access to climbing, hiking, and outdoor recreation.

Properties such as the Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve and Miller Fork Recreational Preserve have brought climbers from around the world to our area. For local youth, however, these incredible outdoor resources are practically in their own backyard.

The After-School Climbing Club provides an opportunity to introduce the next generation to climbing in a controlled indoor environment while helping them develop an appreciation for the outdoor recreation opportunities surrounding their hometown.

Learning to climb is about much more than reaching the top of a wall. Climbing encourages problem-solving, perseverance, physical fitness, confidence, and trust.

It can also help young people develop a stronger connection to the land around them. By introducing local youth to climbing and responsible outdoor recreation, programs like this can help inspire the next generation of climbers, outdoor enthusiasts, and stewards who will care for and protect the recreational lands that make Lee County special.

Whether your child has climbed before or is completely new to the sport, the club is a great place to start.

Come learn from experienced climbers, make new friends, build confidence, and discover a sport that is an important part of outdoor recreation right here in Lee County.
