We are a taxing authority established by a join ordinance between Lee County fiscal court and the city of Beattyville. Established in fall 2011. We collect a 3% transient room tax form all short term lodging rentals and campgrounds to enact our purpose; to promote and develop tourist activities and experiences in our community which boost economic development.
We are your visitor information hub for Beattyville, Lee County, and the surrounding Red River Gorge area. Travelers often call us for recommendations on trails, events, and things to do, both while in the Gorge and throughout Lee County. We also receive requests from visitors across Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee, Georgia, Michigan, and beyond for maps, brochures, and visitor packets that we gladly provide by mail.

It was recognized in the fall of 2011, by all governing bodies that the surrounding areas were outperforming Lee County when it comes to tourism. The City Council of Beattyville, KY and the Fiscal Court of Lee County unanimously agreed upon the establishment of a joint city-county tourism commission.
Eastern Kentucky is known for it’s outdoor adventure and Lee County is not only close to the popular outdoor destinations of the Red River Gorge Geological Area and Natural Bridge State Resort Park, but we also have recreational areas within our county with rival in beauty and adventure. The Pendergrass-Murray, Bald Rock, and Miller Fork Recreational Preserves owned by the Red River Gorge Climbers’ Coalition along with the Rock Domain owned by the Diocese in Lexington attract over 30,000 visitors a year. The Kentucky River is also a beautiful resource for kayaking, fishing, and boating. For OHV enthusiast, the 90 mile Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway trail system that travels through Lee County and the Hollerwood Offroad Park in the Leeco, KY area to the north offer spectacular views and family fun.
New figures released by the Kentucky Department of Tourism show strong continued growth in the tourism economy across Lee County and the wider Daniel Boone Country Region. For Lee County, the 2024 report paints a clear picture: tourism isn’t just about visitors — it’s becoming a key part of the local livelihood.
Much of this success has come from years of partnership and shared vision. Lee County Tourism has collaborated with organizations including Beattyville Main Street, Backroads of Appalachia, Red River Gorge Climbers Coalition, the Kentucky River Authority, Kentucky Riverkeeper, and the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway. Working together, these groups not only promote tourism but develop infrastructure that supports long-term investments in the community.
